Ethical Culture: Our Religious Heritage Ethical religion has a distinguished history
The Ethical Culture Movement
The movement was founded in 1876 by Dr. Felix Adler. The aim of the first generation of Ethical Society members was to create spiritual communities based solely on the common ground of ethical living and free from any religious creed.
Over the decades, Ethical Society members have created a legacy of social progress that includes: Visiting Nurses, Legal Aid Society, first free kindergarten, Child Study Association, NAACP, Ethical Society Schools, Encampment for Citizenship, Weis Ecology Center, Riverdale Mental Health Clinic, National Helping Hands Crafts Sale to End Hunger and Homelessness, and International Partners. The Ethical Societies participate in national and international associations, including observer status at the United Nations, to cultivate a more ethical culture in the world.
For more information about Ethical Culture, check out our Frequently Asked Questions.
The Washington Ethical Society is one of three societies in the greater Washington area. The Northern Virginia society meets in Vienna, VA and the Baltimore society meets in Baltimore, MD.
