Weddings and Life Passage Ceremonies
.
Marriage equality has come to the District of Columbia, and we celebrate the power of love! WES has been performing same-sex ceremonies for years, and we are delighted that they can now be legal marriages. We welcome all who might be interested in being married by one of our licensed officiants, or in our beautiful facility. And every Sunday, we welcome all kinds of families and individuals to be part of our community.

WES provides dignified ceremonies for life's passages

Weddings, Commitment Ceremonies, Namings, Comings of Age, Memorials

Transitioning from one phase of our lives into another is cause for celebration and sometimes guidance. Whether it be from youth into adulthood, from an individual into a couple or the reverse, or from a pair into a multi-member family, the Ethical Society is here to support you.  Please click here to e-mail your request.

Your Wedding or Commitment Ceremony
A couple celebrates their choice to become partners for life by gathering their families and friends to witness their public expression of love and commitment. An Ethical Society leader, who is legally authorized to officiate at weddings, assists each couple to design their ceremony. With music, readings, rituals, and vows, a couple uniquely expresses their personal sense of love and marriage. The celebration itself provides a joining of two families and expresses their spiritual aspirations for the marriage. Celebrants acknowledge people who are important to them and ask their guests to be active participants in their lives.

"Those whom we love are not given to us merely for our joy and happiness. Their truest ministry consists in being to us the revealers of the divine. They quicken in us the seed of better thoughts; they help us estimate rightly the things that are worth trying for; they help us become more equal to the standard of our own best insight and grow into our truer selves."   - Felix Adler

Naming Your Child
A family's participation in the WES community creates a circle of people who become a child's world and culture. How family, friends, and this community relate to each other will determine what conclusions a child draws about how the world works. The annual Naming Ceremony is an opportunity for parents to renew their vows to one another, commit themselves to their child, and ask their community to love their child, respecting his or her uniqueness, and eliciting the best from him or her.

Coming of Age
WES's renowned coming of age program, COA-MATT, culminates in a celebration that involves the entire WES community, as well as the young adults who have passed through the program and their parents.

Memorials
Honoring those who have touched our lives deeply or those for whom we have great gratitude is a core expression for ethical culture. During times of tragedy, members express their caring with practical assistance and encouragement. Organized assistance is coordinated through our Community Leader. Our clergy are available for personal counseling by appointment:
Amanda Poppei, Senior Leader
Mary Herman, Community Leader
